il-ktieb tal-maħbubin midruba                       (the book of maimed lovers)

Il-Ktieb tal-Mahbubin Midruba (The Book of Maimed Lovers) was published in 1999. A span of ten years elapsed from Mifsud's first collection of stories, and here the focus lies mainly on his generation, dubbed by Douglas Coupland as Generation X.

Here we come across a Pet Shop Boys teenage fan writing to a psychologist and venting her suicidal thoughts after her teenage boyfriend left her for another girl, a university professor specialising in the Philosophy of Death delivering his life's most important lecture to a number of chairs in an empty class room, a closed homosexual political candidate chatting on IRC with his cyber lover, a Marxist poet who during an international conference on the future of Marxism after the fall of the wall confesses for the very first time he had had a love affair with a teenage admirer of his.

Portraying himself as a sociologist who writes fiction rather than a short story writer, Mifsud's maimed lovers hail from different walks of life.
